Protein Feeds

Soybean Meal: Soybean meal is the product remaining after extracting most of the oil from whole soybeans.  Soybean meal is high in protein and energy and is one of the most commonly used protein supplements in North America.  It is a palatable feedstuff and may be used as the major protein supplement in rations for dairy cattle.  It contains: 87% TDN, 0.91 NE(I), 55.1% CP. Canola Meal: Canola meal is obtained after removal of most of the oil from the whole seeds.  Heat-processed canola meal is used solely as protein-rich livestock feed.  It is also a widely used protein source in dairy, beef, swine, and poultry feeds.  It contains a minimum of 36% protein by weight.  It has an excellent balance of essential amino acids such as methionine and lysince.  In addition, canola meal is a rich source of B and E vitamins and essential minerals.  It contains: 74% TDN, 0.77 NE(I), 37.4% CP. Sunflower Meal: Sunflower meal is the by-product of the oil extraction process.  Oil is the majority value of sunflower seed and meal is considered a by-product.  Sunflower meal is an excellent livestock feed.  It contains: 74% TDN, 0.77 NE(I), 44.6% CP.

Energy Feeds

Cottonseed: Cottonseed is natural source of protein, fiber and energy.  Whole and delinted cottonseed are concentrated sources of protein and energy for ruminant rations.  It contains: 45% TDN, 0.45 NE(I), 4.1% CP. Pima Cottonseed: Pima cottonseed is a very strong, high-grade cotton of medium staple developed from selected Egyptian cottons now available in California.  Pima cottonseed contains: 96% TDN, 1.01 NE(I), 25% CP. Corn: Corn a major source of food for both humans and animals, play a vital role in the production of beef, eggs, milk, cereals, peanut butter, snack foods and soft drinks.  Corn is an excellent source of energy for livestock.  It is high in digestible energy. Barley: Barley is a cereal grain which serves as a major animal feed crop, with smaller amounts used for malting and in health food. Barley grown for feed is used in rations for all animal types.  Though barley’s energy is not as easily utilized by animals, it does have a higher protein content than corn or soybean, which reduces the need for a protein supplement in a feed compound.  It contains: 59% TDN, 0.60 NE(I), 12.5% CP.  Wheat: Wheat is a member of the grass family that produces a dry one-seeded fruit commonly called kernel.  Wheat is the primary grain used in the U.S. grain products.  Due to advances in technology, using these wheat products is now as efficient as using other commodities, such as corn of soybeans.  It contains: 79% TDN, 0.83 NE(I), 17.2% CP.

Fiber Feeds

Beet Pulp: Beet Pulp is the vegetable matter that remains after sugar is extracted from sliced sugar beets.  It is bulk feed, high in fiber and unique in that its fiber is highly digestible.  It contains: 78% TDN, 0.81 NE(I), 9.7% CP. Soy Hull Pellets: Soybean hulls are by-product of soybean processing for oil and meal production.  The products contain about 11 to 12% protein, 32 to 34% crude fiber, and 65% TDN (as fed). Almond Hulls: Almond hulls are by-product of the almond processing industry.  They consist of the outer covering of the almond, but do not include the hard shell.  The energy value of average hulls is about equivalent to early bloom Lucerne hay and about 70% the value of barley on an energy basis and are a valuable source of digestible fiber and sugars.  It contains: 52% TDN, 0.52 NE(I), 2.0% CP.

Additional Feeds

Additional feeds include: Rice Bran (62% TDN, 0.64 NE(I), 15.9% CP, Liquid Whey (81% TDN, 0.85 NE(I), 14.2% CP, Grape Pomace, Heifer Mix, Raisin Stems, Rice Hulls, Almond by-products and Nut Meals.
